Working from one place to another. The next day can always be different, coming with new projects and challenges. That's the work/life-style for many freelancers today. So it is for Setting member and English copywriter Cherrie Kishazy, hailing from the UK and having her base now in Berlin. We caught up with Cherrie to talk about her decision to come to Berlin and her independent work life.

Why did you decide to move to Berlin?

Ever since first visiting the city it has been among my favourite places in the world; whether it’s the people, the history or the all-round energy, it’s hard to say. I’d been living in Austria for a year and was getting restless when a friend told me she was subletting her Prenzlauer Berg apartment. Having studied German since school, I had no hesitation in saying yes, and not once have I regretted that decision.

What part of your job do you enjoy the most?

It’s either the variety of meeting new people, getting an insight into different companies and focusing on a range of projects, or the flexibility of being able to choose when and where I work. The process of going freelance has been a huge learning curve, and an extremely rewarding one at that.

What inspires you?

In both professional and personal life I’m well-and-truly inspired by this city and the people I’ve met here. There are endless meetups and startup events, free opportunities to dance and listen to live music, and the definite feeling that anything goes. Exploring new and foreign places is always healthy though; I’m all in favour of leaving that comfort zone.

What’s your preferred working environment?

Somewhere being light and airy is more of a priority than noise levels for me. There’s little I love more than sitting in a coffee shop typing away, but street-facing windows are the ultimate distraction, and I’m trying to keep my caffeine addiction under control! A comfortable space in an uncluttered office is where I can focus best, so that’s where I spend most of my working time.

What’s your favourite way to spend your free time in Berlin?

It wasn’t until recently that I realised the ease and beauty of seeing the city by bike. Riding around Tiergarten and Tempelhof and along the Spree before brunch in Friedrichshain or Prenzlauer Berg has got to be the perfect way to spend a weekend. I also love abandoned buildings and rooftops at sunset!
