Sex simply sells. That's also been the experience of Jan Kroschinski and Stefan Moll and their sex-app UnderCovers. The app aims to help couples to bring fun back into the bed room, by answering anonymously 99 sex fantasies which will then be revealed, if they apply to both partners. We asked Jan (right on the picture) to share more about how they came about to create UnderCovers.
What's the story behind UnderCovers?
It all comes back to one afternoon when Stefan stumbled upon a book about sex. Having been in a relationship, for six years, he was astonished by the large number of fantasies he never tried before. Inspired by Tinder, he came up with the idea for UnderCovers and pitched it to me while we were moving into our new flat in Rotterdam, where we did our masters. As soon as we unpacked the last boxes we started working on the specifications for the app.
What has been some of the challenges with creating the app?
An ongoing challenge for us is to phrase all content in the app in a sweet and playful way, even when the topic at hand is actually perceived to be quite hard. After we selected the fantasies which should be part of the app, it took Stefan and me another 100 hours to phrase them...and that's just for one language! Fortunately, our team just got a new member. Since last week Renée is responsible for our content and she just has a way with words.
What's been your experience in recruiting people (to work for a 'sex app')?
I don't think that it is very different from recruiting for other purposes to be honest. We look at CVs and conduct interviews. Admittedly, we sometimes get rather crazy "applications". For example, one guy sent us a video he made with his girlfriend, if you catch my drift. However, those go to directly to the bin. We are looking for normal people who share our vision: To turn every couple's love life into a lasting adventure. So far, that worked pretty well and we are really happy with our hires.
What's your most favourite part of the app?
I love how the app has a positive impact on couples' love lives. In the beginning, relationships are amazing. However, after some time routine takes over. If UnderCovers helps to break this routine and inspires people to try something new, that's just great!
