Setting Startup Office - Lateral

Having visited startup office after startup office all over Berlin, we’re kicking off a series to feature some of our absolute favourites. You’re surely familiar with the classic startup setup - employees sitting on stacks of Club Mate crates and a foosball table in the corner - but we’re bringing you the teams whose workspaces are defying the stereotype.

Our first example of how it’s really done is young startup Lateral.

Lateral developed an API for intelligent content recommendations. Their use cases for personalised content recommendation range from consulting and academics to art and media. The team of five met in London where they ran a digital agency. Open to new challenges, they moved to Berlin in 2012 where the idea for Lateral developed.

Upon first arriving in Berlin, the team occupied a few desks in co-working space betahaus, later switching to hub:raum, before moving into their own office earlier this year. Located near to Berlin’s buzzing Mehringdamm intersection, their space is tucked away in a quieter courtyard. How very Berlin!

As soon as you enter Lateral’s office, the bright and open space creates an uplifting ambience. With their background in design, the team have created a clean yet edgy environment; little details, such as the ‘flying garden’ installation at the back of the office, give the place its charm and character.

What we most admire about the space, however, is how the Lateral team managed to balance the playful with the functional, without using too many resources. But don’t take our word for it! Check it out yourself.
